How Often Do I Need a Pelvic Exam?

Pelvic exams give your OB/GYN an opportunity to check in on the health of your female organs and reproductive system. Regular pelvic exams and Pap smears are an essential part of every woman’s health care.

You can receive your regular pelvic exam at Women’s Health Partners of the Permian Basin, with locations in Odessa and Midland, Texas. Dr. Mary Grace Bridges and her team offer expert OB/GYN care to new and existing patients.

How often should you come in for a pelvic exam, and what happens during the appointment? Here are some helpful details.

When you need a pelvic exam

General guidelines suggest that women between the ages of 21 and 65 should have pelvic exams on a regular basis, generally every three years. Depending on your unique needs and overall health, you may need a yearly exam, though.

Health conditions or unexpected problems or pain may mean that you need to be seen more often. You may need a pelvic exam if you have symptoms like pain during sex, or unusual vaginal discharge or bleeding. You may also need a pelvic exam related to pregnancy or a suspected sexually transmitted infection (STI).

In addition, Dr. Bridges may recommend more frequent pelvic exams if you have a family history of conditions like cervical cancer.

What to expect at your regular pelvic exam

You undress for your pelvic exam, changing into a paper gown. Then you recline on an examination table with your feet in stirrups. Dr. Bridges uses a device called a speculum to learn more about the health of your internal pelvic organs, and conducts an examination of your external genitals, as well.

She checks on your uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. All of these parts of your body are located in your pelvic area. Dr. Bridges may also check your bladder and rectum during your pelvic exam.

Your pelvic exam may also include a Pap smear, used to check for early warning signs of cancer. Dr. Bridges uses your yearly pelvic exam to establish a baseline for your health and wellness, making it easier to note changes when and if any appear.

Keeping you in good whole-body health

With regular exams, you can ensure that your female organs get the care they need. If Dr. Bridges notices signs of any abnormalities, she orders further testing to confirm your diagnosis. She can help you understand your results, and plan any needed future treatments.
